World’s Most Expensive Floor Mats

That’s not a typo. These VW floor mats were surfing around the Internet and people were paying upwards of $1000,00 for a set of used ones. You won’t find many of these original Vanagon Mats selling any longer because a start-up company recently “relaunched” them for $200 a set. But it was absolutely hysterical to see people buying these used mats up like they were bars of gold.

What makes this weirder is that a new set of regular-style floor mats from a leading company like WeatherTech sold for under $100 at the time this trend happened.

I recently posted about an old car magazine that fetched $500 (I owned one). But I think this tops that story by a country mile.

eBay advertisement for Vanagon floor mats. These will be gone soon guaranteed.

These original Vanagon mats were made for VW enthusiasts decades ago, probably during the 1980s by some unknown entrepreneur. I assume they were offered until supplies lasted.

When this craziness started I did some research online and I failed to find the original manufacturer of the VANAGON rubber mat, but these likely first appeared in limited numbers across the U.S. A set came with my Vanagon when I bought it years ago, and they are durable, but not like today’s WeatherTech mats, and whoever made these must have purchased a “license” from VW to sell them with a VW logo, or so I hope.

I suspect it was a smaller manufacturer that likely sold them through small automotive stores. Anyway, the “originals” as I call them are no longer available new. Anywhere in the world. Unless you opt for a re-issued set you’ll have to buy the original ones used. I saw a comment on the Facebook group Vanagon Cafe from the person selling re-issued versions. Go check it out because they look identical.

So the “original” Vanagon floor mat trend petered out like some Crypto currency schemes. But along the way a few savvy sellers (not me) got big dollars for sticky used floor mats. Wow. I missed the boat I guess!
